Use These Free Programs For Easier PC Maintenance

I work for an internet helpdesk part time and there are several free programs we recommend in order to keep your PC clean and free from viruses and malware. Good maintenance on your PC is necessary to keep it running smoothly. If you start to notice sluggish behavior from your computer, try cleaning it up before blaming your internet provider.

Avast, CCleaner, Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy are our favorites. Any computer that comes into the office for repair on the bench gets these 4 programs added to it (unless it already has a good antivirus program). We often find that most people don't have enough of these cleanup programs, and if they do, they don't run them. Most of the free ones don't run automatically, so you have to remember to run them on your own.

You should run these programs 2-3 times a month for average computer use, more often if you're a heavy user. They're all free and will help keep your computer out of the repair shop if you stay on top of your schedule.

Many people make the assumption that cleaning the computer once keeps it clean forever. We often hear, "I just cleaned it last month" and they wonder why they're full of viruses again. Also, the user activity determines risk levels for viruses. If you're constantly downloading illegal music and movie files off file sharing sites then you're ripe for a nasty virus. The creators of those are sometimes vigilant about trying to sabotage the downloader so they put their own malicious files in with the movie download. It's best to just get things legally.

Alana likes to write about a variety of topics in the hopes of educating others.
