Who Says the Chinese Cannot Innovate?

Some might say that the Chinese are not very good innovators, rather they are really good imitators. At first glance this stereotype might ring true, because we notice all the patent hijackings, knock off parts, and even copyright infringements coming in from China. In fact, the Chinese public actually holds hackers who steal secrets from computer systems and software pirates in high esteem.

Not long ago, the Chinese government had difficulty in prosecuting one of the individuals that was copying Microsoft Software and selling it by the millions of copies. Apparently, he'd become a local folk hero, and the Chinese government didn't want to prosecute him for fear of angering its citizens.

It is for all these reasons and more that people have come to the conclusion that China cannot innovate. However, before anyone makes that charge, and reports it as the whole truth, there are some things I'd like to bring up; a few quick points of contention. Tell me have you ever heard of:

Yo-Yo

Acupuncture

Wheel Barrel

Stirrup

Iron

Clock

Kite

Fan

Playing Cards

Propeller

Planetarium

Interestingly enough, all of those inventions came from China, and which nations was first to map the entire topography of the moon? So, China has a long history going back to ancient times of innovations. Anyone thing that thinks that China cannot innovate, that they can only imitate, re-create, or reverse engineer everything that we make here in the United States, is flat wrong!

Indeed, China is also graduating more engineers, and it has more new entrepreneurs, than any other country on the planet. Soon China will have more English-speaking individuals, than the US has citizens. And due to the size of the Chinese population of 1.3 billion they also have a larger percentage of geniuses, than America has in her middle class. So don't be so quick to judge, and don't tell me China cannot innovate, because that's nonsense. Please consider all this.

Lance Winslow is a retired Founder of a Nationwide Franchise Chain, and now runs the Online Think Tank.
